John 3:16

For God so loved the World, that He gave His one and only Son, that whosoever would believe in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life.

What does that mean? Simple.
Trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you will be saved.

Saved from What?
Certain Spiritual Death.

Why should it matter?
God Loves you, and only wants the best for you.

If He wants the best for me, then why is there poverty, sickness, crime, etc.?
Poverty, sickness and crime and all manner of evil are all tied to humanity. When someone becomes power hungry, that's all they desire, is power. What does a powerful person want? More power. People believe it is Satan (Lucifer, Beelzebub, and many other names...), and when it comes to the mind, it is Satan. However, in physical actions, it's humanity. You make the choice, and you follow through with it. The only power Satan has over you is in your mind. You can push him away, and accept the Glory of Christ. In this, you defeat death and get Eternal Spiritual life instead.

How did this all happen in the first place?
Well, your best bet is to read Genesis in the Bible. The New Living Translation gives the best explanation because it's broken down into phrases we use today.
